They said much of the day's activity centered on the nearby September/December switch as traders focused on adjusting positions ahead of September's first notice day on August 18. Dealers said switches accounted for a large portion of the session's estimated turnover of 16,357 lots. "The switch was the main feature," said one dealer. "About half of the volume was spread activity. They were rolling short Septs forward." Active December fell $21 a tonne on the day, to $1,515, after ranging from $1,543 to $1,512. Spot September ended $4 weaker, at $1,492, while the back months slumped $26 to $31. September/December ended at $23 compared with $40 at the close on Monday. Some traders said the latest forecast for the Ivory Coast 1997/98 main-crop weighed on sentiment. An unnamed industry analyst said on Tuesday that the Ivorian main-crop could reach up to 1.1 million tonnes depending on the weather over the next four to five weeks. The crop analyst said the forecast, based on pod counts including developing fruits, showed a 1997/98 main crop similar or slightly above 1996/97 levels, which he put at 1.01 million tonnes by April 29, 1996 -- the end of the main crop. "It's a fairly big number and some people were surprised the analyst was calling for that big of a crop," said one trader. "I think it was influential and caused some of the mid-to-late day sell-off." Dealers expect market participants to continue to concentrate on September rollover or liquidation. With less than a week to go before entering delivery period, September open interest stood at 15,433 lots on Monday, down 1,273 lots from the previous session. "There still going to be a lot of focus on September," said a trader. "The recent low look bad technically, but there's not that many longs left." On the charts, traders said December faced some support at $1,510, followed by $1,500. On the upside, resistance was seen near $1,526-$1,528. 131025 MET aug 97
