September cocoa fell $29 per tonne on the day, to $1,510, after ranging between $1,538 and $1,508. Second-month December closed $29 lower, at $1,559, while the back months also finished down $29. Cocoa prices fell at the opening, gapping down more than $10, on the heels of the market's sharply higher close on Monday. Dealers noted origin selling overnight in Europe set a bearish tone. They said New York's lack of follow-through to the upside after filling a key chart gap on Monday in September between $1,521 and $1,526 as well as September's inability to get past $1,540 prompted speculators to unload long positions today. "It filled the gap but failed at $1,540," said one trader. "Specs who bought it yesterday dumped it today." Some traders said today's weak finish was disappointing and could lead to further selling on Wednesday, while other traders expected buying on dips to prevent a wash out. "There's mixed feelings here," said one floor trader. "It ended near the lows, but some guys like it and are looking buy it." Technically, traders said September faced support in the low $1,490s, followed by $1,485 and $1,475. On the upside, resistance was seen near $1,520, then $1,526-$1,527 and $1,540. On the fundamental side, Economist Intelligence Unit on Tuesday lowered its 1996/97 world cocoa deficit estimate to 85,000 tonnes from 200,000 tonnes previously due to higher-than-expected production. Cocoa posted a supply surplus of 160,000 tonnes in the 1995/96 season, it said. In its third quarter 1997 world commodity forecasts, EIU put the supply cocoa deficit at 73,000 tonnes in 1997/98 and 18,000 in 1998/99. In other news, Ivorian cocoa bean exports fell to 21,841 tonnes in June from 34,966 in May as port deliveries remained slack after the main crop season (Oct-April), official shipping data show. Volume on tha day reached an estimated 7,937 lots. 301046 MET jul 97
