"It was expected on a technical basis and it was about time," said one trader. "The market was so depressed, it wasn't a big shock." Benchmark September cocoa jumped $21 per tonne on the day, to $1,481, after ranging between $1,484 and $1,462. Second-month December rose $17, to $1,521, while the back months ended up $13 to $14. Cocoa prices rose at the outset, in line with gains on the London market overnight. Traders said a combination of local and speculative short-covering and some trade buying bolstered the market in New York. Technically, traders said CSCE September faced some resistance near $1,485, followed by $1,500. Support was seen at Thursday's close of $1,460. Despite today's strong gains, September cocoa lost $36 on the week. Dealers said the market could come under further pressure in the near-term, as market participants liquidate or rollover the September contract ahead of its first notice day on August 18. September open interest was down 914 lots on Thursday, but was still relatively large at 18,473 lots, they said. "Open interest of 18,000 is pretty significant with only a week left," said one trader. After Friday's close, CSCE data showed certified cocoa stocks as of August 8 in New York, Delaware and Hampton Roads warehouses stood at 4,061,079 compared with 4,499,117 a year ago. Turnover reached an estimated 7,659 lots. 111050 MET aug 97
