"It was a slow drag down on spec and fund liquidation," said one trader. "It lost its resolve and drifted lower." Benchmark September cocoa sagged $5 per tonne on the day, to $1,497, just off the session low of $1,496. Second-month December eased $2, to $1,547, while the back months finished unchanged to down $1. Cocoa prices headed higher at the outset, with September gapping up $11 at the open and peaking at $1,520 on the reopening, in line with gains on the London cocoa market overnight. But speculative liquidation emerged almost immediately, preventing September from filling a key gap on the charts between $1,521 and $1,526. Technically, traders pegged September support at $1,485, with the next downside target seen at $1,475. They continued to see the $1,521-$1,526 gap as an upside chart objective. Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast said cocoa prices could fall to $1,400 basis September based on the market's fundamental outlook. "We have ample stocks," she said. "And the Ivorian new-crop coming in is generous." Traders continued to monitor cocoa crop development in West Africa, with a better picture of the 1997/98 Ivorian crop expected to emerge next month. Ivorian crop analysts said on Wednesday that Ivory Coast's dry season in July favored drying of mid-crop cocoa (May-Sept) and is not expected to not damage pod growth for 1997/98 (Oct-April). In other news, Ivory Coast is likely to raise its reference cocoa and coffee farmgate prices in the 1997/98 (Oct-Sept) season, upcountry buyers and exporters said. Ivory Coast set a cocoa farmgate price of 315 CFA a kilo for 1996/97, unchanged from the 1995/96 year, although export duties were cut. Volume on the day reached an estimated 8,122 lots, including about 350 March 1998/December 1998 switches crossed, traders said. 241026 MET jul 97
