Turnover was fairly heavy, at an estimated 15,190 lots, but traders said brisk dealings in Septmber/December switches accounted for much of the day's volume. Benchmark September cocoa rose $2 per tonne on the day, to $1,460, after ranging between $1,470 and $1,445. Second-month December closed unchanged, at $1,504, while the back months ended flat to up $2. Cocoa prices rose in early going, but speculative long liquidation quickly erased gains and sent the September contract down more than $20. Trade and industry-linked buying, however, prevented further losses and helped reverse momentum, dealers said. "There was good spec liquidation in the morning," said one dealer. "It started running out and the trade and industry were still buying it and it bounced back." Dealers expect market activity in the near-term to revolve around September, as market participants liquidate or rollover the spot contract ahead of its first notice day on August 18. Although September open interest was down 1,793 lots on Wednesday, it was still a relatively large 19,387 lots, and some traders said the market could come under further pressure. On the charts, traders said September faced resistance near $1,470-$1,475, while today's low of $1,445 provided good support.
