They said the run-up was mainly technically driven, with the benchmark September contract clearing a key chart gap between $1,521 and $1,526 per tonne and triggering buy-stops. September cocoa jumped $32 per tonne on the day, to $1,539, its highest settlement since July 16, after ranging between $1,540 and $1,494. Second-month December also closed up $32, to $1,588, while the back months rose $29. Cocoa prices fell at the opening, gapping down more than $10, on light speculative selling after weakness overnight in London. But sterling's fall against the U.S. dollar and German mark prompted a turnaround in London, driving LIFFE benchmark September cocoa to its highest settlement in a week. September soared 26 stg, to close at to 1,018 stg. Traders said the dollar's strength drew some arbitrage sales in New York, but not enough to dampen speculators' enthusiasm. "When London went higher, specs in New York started buying too," said one trader. "London broke up through 1,000 (stg basis LIFFE September) and probably broke their recent downward trend." Technically, traders said September now faced some resistance near $1,550, followed by a chart gap between $1,561 and $1,570. Support was seen near $1,530. No new fundamentals were behind today's rally, but traders continued to monitor new crop development and the weather in top-grower Ivory Coast. "It is starting to get dry, which is typical during the 'mini dry season' in the Ivory Coast, but it has made people a little nervous," said one trader. The trader also noted that with not much cocoa coming in between main crops, stock levels were beginning to decline slightly. He said a smaller Ivorian mid-crop, as well as producers holding back shipments in anticipation of higher prices and increased grindings at origin may have contributed to the drawdown. Ivorian industry analysts said on Monday the country's cocoa grind could rise to around 200,000 tonnes in the 1997/98 season (Oct-Sept) from an estimated 145,000 tonnes in 1996/97 as new capacity comes on stream. Volume on tha day reached an estimated 9,131 lots. 291026 MET jul 97
