Benchmark September cocoa rose $19 per tonne on the day, to $1,516, just shy of the day's peak of $1,518 and beneath chart resistance at a gap between $1,521 and $1,526. Second-month December also closed up $19, to $1,566, while the back months finished $16 to $18 higher. Cocoa prices headed lower at the outset, with September gapping down $18 at the open to the session low of $1,480, as speculators liquidated long positions after a poor performance in London overnight. But traders said industry buying emerged toward the lows, stemming further losses and preventing a test of key chart support at $1,475 basis September. "Technically, it did not break the $1,475 level and once it didn't do that, the market bounced back," said one trader, who added that a lack of selling -- most notably from origin -- exaggerated the upswing. On the fundamental side, traders continue to watch cocoa crop development in West Africa, with a better picture of the 1997/98 Ivorian crop expected to emerge next month. "The Ivory Coast picture is looking better, the counts are looking good, but it is still early," said a trader. "They still need rain and if they have some rains the market will come under pressure." Volume on the day reached an estimated 9,730 lots.
