CSCE cocoa ends lower in lackluster trading
NEW YORK, July 25 (Reuter) - CSCE cocoa futures ended
moderately lower in somnolent trading on Friday, pressured by
local and light speculative selling ahead of the weekend,
dealers said.
"It was really a nothing day, kind of featureless," said one
trader.
Benchmark September cocoa fell $9 per tonne on the day, to
$1,507, after ranging between $1,516 and $1,504. Second-month
December closed down $10, to $1,556, while the back months
sagged $4 to $6.
The September/December switch ended at $49 compared with $50
at the close on Thursday.
Cocoa prices headed lower at the outset, defying pre-opening
expectations based on gains racked up on the London market.
Traders said strength in the U.S. dollar against the sterling
and other European currencies sparked some light arbitrage
selling.
Scale-down industry buying, however, limited losses and kept
prices hovering in a small range for much of the session, they
said.
Technically, traders pegged September near-term support at
$1,496-$1,494, with stronger support noted at $1,475. Resistance
was seen at a chart gap between $1,521 and $1,526.
On the fundamental side, U.S.-based commodities group
Cargill said on Friday it and Groupe d'Investissements et de
Participations Afrique (GIP) have agreed to form a joint venture
to originate, condition and export cocoa and coffee from Ivory
Coast.
Also under consideration is a plan to build in the Ivorian
capital Abidjan a new cocoa processing plant, which would have
an annual capacity of 65,000 tonnes, Cargill Europe said in a
statement.
Turnover on the day was thin, at an estimated 3,994 lots.
