Benchmark March futures eased $4, to close at $1,590 a tonne. Second-position May lost $5 to end at $1,625, while the back months settled between $5 and $6 lower. The market rallied early in the session, aided by some arbitrage buying against cocoa futures in London. But the gains proved to be short-lived, with the market hitting solid resistance in the low $1,600 area basis March. Today's minor decline followed two days of see-saw trading in the cocoa market. New York cocoa prices galloped higher in a chart-driven trading on Tuesday, but gave back all of the gains a day later after yet another round of strong crop shipment figures hit the market. In Ivory Coast, the world's leading cocoa grower, port arrivals totaled 816,000 tonnes as of January 25, well above the 732,000 tonnes seen at this time last year. Similarily strong purchases were seen from No. 2 producer Ghana. "As shipments become more aggressive, it's a tough time of year for cocoa to rally," one broker said. Otherwise, dealers said they expected a supply-demand forecast due out early Friday from trade-house E D & F Man to confirm a small production deficit in the 1997/98 crop year/ Last autumn, Man put the global supply shortfall at anywhere from 150,000 to 400,000 tonnes depending on the effects of El Nino on crop production in West Africa and Southeast Asia. Technically, the March contract faced resistance near $1,620, and then in the mid-$1,640s. To the downside, chartists said a decline through the $1,573 level could provoke a test of the recent lows toward $1,535. The day's volume amounted to a light 5,708 lots.
