Spread trades were the standout feature for a second straight day, as long holders focused on rolling spot positions into the back months ahead of first notice day in March. March futures climbed to $1,591, taking back most of the previous day's losses. Trades were posted from $1,588 to $1,605. Second-position May rose $9 to $1,626. The back months gained between $8 and $10. Speculation that top-grower Ivory Coast may come in near the record harvest of 1.2 million tonnes seen in 1995/96 has weighed heavily on prices in the last month. "There should be good availability nearby, so longs are bailing," one trader said. Technically, a gap left over from last month at $1,616-$1,629 in March remained an important overhead target, while support was noted in the mid-$1,570s. An estimated 8,313 lots were traded Thursday, including as many as 3,000 March-May switches.
