The bellwether March contract fell $11 to close at $1,583 a tonne, having traded from $1,594 to $1,578. Second-position May fell $10 to $1,617, while the back months finished between $7 and $12 lower. Prices headed down from the outset as little follow-through interest emerged to Tuesday's sweeping rally. Traders said the presence of producer selling overhead played a role in today's downturn. "There still seem to be some origin offers overhead, which keeps the market from getting too enthused to the upside," one broker said. The May-July and March-December spreads were well offered, dealers said, with switches accounting for a good proportion of the day's estimated 6,940-lot volume. Dealers said the failure to build on Tuesday's gains underscored a reluctance on the part of end-users to bid the market higher in the wake of strong cocoa shipments in West Africa. "Through the summertime, there was some concern about El Nino, but the reality is that the arrival numbers have been coming in much better than anticipated, so people are repositioning themselves," the broker said. Technically, stiff resistance was noted toward the $1,616 area in March, the lower edge of a chart gap left over from last month. To the downside, an immediate target awaited at $1,576, followed by $1,559. 221119 MET jan 98
