The market lingered at moderately lower levels for much of the session, held down by speculative and producer selling. But a sharp decline in the U.S. dollar against the world's major currencies eventually came to the rescue, as dealers capitalized on New York's widening discount to the sterling-denominated London cocoa market. "Any sign of strength late in the day was probably dollar-related," one broker said. "It probably helped to keep the market from falling away through the day." Benchmark March futures ended at $1,591 a tonne, unchanged from the previous day. Second-position May was also unchanged, at $1,626, while the back months all fell $1. The dollar slumped Friday as investors fretted allegations of misconduct against President Clinton. The British pound rose to $1.6737 from $1.6480 on Thursday. Aside from currency fluctuations, the switches were once again actively traded as dealers adjusted positions ahead of March's first notice day in three weeks' time.
