ZAGREB, July 13 (Hina) - Croatia's Foreign Minister Mate Granic and
a special representative of the UNICEF for former Yugoslav states,
Steven Allen, on Tuesday signed an Operational Plan for 1999 and
2000 on behalf of the Croatian Government and the UNICEF.
The plan, worth US$2,200,000, includes various forms of UNICEF
assistance to Croatia, Granic said, adding Croatia would continue
cooperating with the UNICEF.
Allen welcomed the signing of the agreement, adding the UNICEF was
encouraged by its excellent cooperation with Croatia.
The cooperation between the UNICEF and Croatia is aimed at helping
the country improve its planning in programmes of children
protection as well, fulfil the needs of children, especially in
war-affected areas, and promote the training of young people, Allen
said.
The forms of help the UNICEF has been providing for Croatia over the
past nine years has changed, Granic said. At one time, the UNICEF
provided humanitarian aid and today the assistance is given through
various specialised programmes, Granic said.
Speaking about the financial side of the programme, Allen said the
1999 programme was financed by governments and UNICEF national
committees throughout the world.
The UNICEF's cooperation with Croatia in 2001 will also include a
regional programme to be conducted by the UNICEF office in Geneva,
Allen said, adding he was optimistic because of the good
cooperation the UNICEF has had with Croatia so far.
Today's agreement is the last one of serious agreements signed
between the UNICEF and Croatia since the opening of the UNICEF
office in 1991, Allen said, expressing hope that cooperation would
continue in the new millennium through regional programmes.
Granic said Croatia would be rated better for cooperation with the
UNICEF after the singing of today's agreement.
