PRISTINA, July 12 (Hina) - While negotiations with international
peace-keepers (KFOR) and the UN mission are still under way on the
commencement of broadcasting the radio and television programme in
the Albanian language by the Pristina RTV, several local radio
stations in Kosovo have begun airing their programmes.
One of the first radio stations to re-start the programme in
Albanian has been the station in the town of Prizren.
Since last month this station has been broadcasting daily six hours
of programme in Albanian and since last Sunday it has been airing
the two-hour-long programme in the German language. It is being
prepared by a crew of the German KFOR contingent, the headquarters
of which is in this Kosovo town.
The programmes of the Prizren station can be listened to outside
Kosovo, in Tetovo, Macedonia, and Rozaj, Montenegro, for
instance.
The station will soon begin to broadcast the programme in the
Turkish language, as members of the Turk ethnic minority live in
Prizren as well.
For the time being, there is no programme in the Serbian language,
as few Serbs have remained in this south-western town, the radio
management said.
The importance of the role of this radio stations is increased by
the fact that there is a lack of the press in the Albanian language
and that there are problems in telephone connections in the area.
Out of Kosovo towns, only the capital, Pristina, has partially re-
established long-distance links. It is possible from Pristina to
call people in other towns but, on the other hand, one cannot have
long-distance calls from other towns.
