ZAGREB, June 17 (Hina) - The Institute of Open Society in Croatia on
Thursday presented media and media programmes which would be given
about 300,000 dollars of assistance this year, out of planned
600,000, according to a decision of the Society's managing board.
Most money (80,000 dollars) has been allocated to the project of a
culture magazine entitled "Zarez (Comma)" and the "Feral Tribune"
weekly which has received 30,000 dollars, said Sasa Milosevic, the
director of the Open Society media programme, at a news conference
on Thursday. He added that applications for receiving the financial
assistance could be still submitted to the Society.
"Hrvatska Ljevica (The Croatia Left), "Identitet (Identity)",
"Polemos" and other will get money from the Society Milosevic told
reporters adding that, according to the managing board, these media
promote values of the civil society, democracy, the rights of
minorities as well as struggle against the language of hatred.
An assistance of six thousand dollars has been earmarked to "TV
Dunav (TV Danube)" in the eastern Croatian town of Beli Manastir,
the broadcast entitled "Cenzura (Censorship)" of the Split-based
ATV television station and some local radio stations each.
According to Milosevic, such help was intended to support
independent media in Croatia without interference into their
editorial policies.
Asked how "Hrvatska Ljevica" (the gazette of the Socialist Labour
Party, SRP) happened to be in the list of financed magazines,
Milosevic said they "wanted to send also a certain political
message" by this support (to the journal of SRP) but gave no further
explanation what it might mean.
