Although they are not entirely satisfied with a government decree
on a supplement for special working conditions in public services,
and consider that other requests for the improvement of the
financial status of customs officers have not been met, union
representatives have decided to discontinue the strike due to
kilometre-long pile-ups at border crossings.
The unionists believe that the strike of warning, which covered 80
percent of customs officers, was entirely successful and stress
that a large majority of customs officers took part in it.
During the strike, plane arrivals were 30-45 minutes delayed, lines
at border crossings were up to six kilometres long, and drivers had
to wait several hours for their cars to be checked.
The union will today call on the government to continue
negotiations about its requests for the improvement of the
financial and work status of customs officers, whose average salary
of around 2,900 kuna is 40 percent lower than the salaries of other
public servants.
The government decree of yesterday will enable a 10-20 percent
increase in the wages of public servants who work in special
conditions, which would result in a 600 kuna increase in customs
officers' salaries, which they are not satisfied with.
Customs officers insist on the definition of job safety
regulations, the continuation of collective bargaining, the
introduction of an accelerated retirement plan, and the revision of
coefficients.
