According to unofficial information, a large group of inmates
barricaded themselves in blocks and started destroying prison
furniture.
By this morning the rebellion was reportedly localised to one
block.
The Zenica prison can accept around 600 inmates but it is regularly
overcrowded and living conditions are below normal standards.
Last year the prison caught media attention following claims that
Croat inmates were exposed to intimidation and forced to convert to
Islam.
The head of the prison, Hidajet Jabandzic, resolutely dismissed the
claims, stating that they were part of a campaign of Croat inmates
whose purpose was their transfer to a prison in Mostar.
An independent parliamentary commission, which investigated the
case, found no evidence of Croats being forced to convert to Islam,
but stated that living conditions in the prison had to be improved
as soon as possible.
