MOSTAR, Jan 31 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia-
Herzegovina on Friday vehemently condemned the latest case of abuse
of inmates of Croat origin in the prison in Zenica. #L#
According to a statement the strongest Croat party in Bosnia
released on Friday, the latest incident occurred on 29 January when
guards and Bosniak (Muslim) inmates beat a group of Croats. One of
the beaten Croats was later admitted into hospital and the other
ended up in solitary confinement.
The party protested against the latest incident, adding that it was
just one of many cases of systematic repression over imprisoned
Croats in the jail in that city in central Bosnia.
"It is horrendous that every time prisoners spoke about their
position, they were subsequently physically harassed or punished
in a more perfidious way. Testimonies about attempts to forcefully
islamise Croats are appalling," read the statement.
The party insists on an urgent investigation in the said cases and
on the replacement of persons accountable for such crimes.
The implementation of necessary measures requires the engagement
of top Croatian and Bosniak federal and state officials, with
assistance of the international community and the Office of the
High Representative, as well as the engagement of human rights
activists, the statement added.
