LME lacklustre at midsession, nickel weak again
LONDON, Dec 30 (Reuter) - Business was slow during Monday's
LME official rings, with softer price levels largely reflecting
the seasonal lack of interest, although a depressed nickel
market slumped to new 2-1/4 year lows.
Traders said nickel was hit by further liquidation and
speculative sales, but copper and the other metals tended to
drift lower.
"We don't expect too much for the rest of this week. We're
closed on Wednesday, and the Japanese have holidays towards the
end of the week, I believe," one trader said.
Nevertheless, there will be pockets of interest throughout
the week. Tuesday sees latest warehouse stock data, while
January options will be declared on Thursday - the first
business day of 1997.
Cash pricing sales exerted some pressure on copper, although
business was light and the market was largely rangebound. Last
three months business on the kerb was at $2,123, little changed
from Friday's $2,127 close.
Nickel was flirting with price levels below $6,400, and a
clear breach of this area could trigger sell-stops and trade
down to the next chart support level of $6,330. Prices closed
the morning at $6,395, an $81 loss from Friday.
Aluminium was ably defended above the $1,540 level, and with
physical interest being seen this week the downside appears to
be limited in the short-term. Final kerb trade was at $1,543,
down just $3 from last week.
However, both lead and zinc look vulnerable after sliding
back this morning. Lead is poised to test $700 on the downside,
ending at $702, an $11 loss from Friday, although traders cite
current cold weather in Europe as a supportive factor.
Zinc eased under $1,070, and is now likely to test $1,060,
although trade was slack. Last kerb business was at $1,067, down
$8.
Tin finished the morning at $5,740/50 a tonne, against last
Friday's $5,730, while alloy was quietly lower at $1,385/90.
