LME copper firms, breaches $2,130 resistance
LONDON, Dec 19 (Reuter) - Copper prices pushed up above the
$2,130 resistance level in thin trading on Thursday, with most
of the other metals following it to firmer levels, traders said.
Aluminium also firmed on the back of copper, sweeping easily
above the nearby $1,540 resistance level, although its upside
potential was seen limited, they added.
Three-months copper ended the morning kerb on the London
Metal Exchange (LME) at $2,139, up $25 from Wednesday's
afternoon kerb close.
"There's been some speculative buying and possibly light
fund buying as the spreads tighten," a trader said, adding that
the buying was a combination of shortcovering and fresh buying.
But volumes were thin ahead of the Christmas holiday, which
was exaggerating any moves, dealers noted.
Prices had zipped higher at the end of PM kerb trading on
Wednesday after borrowing of January dates and a widening
backwardation induced shortcovering. Late inter-office trading
saw prices move still higher to just under $2,130.
Cash to three months backwardation tightened further on
Thursday to around $100, up about $10.
Copper's next upside target was $2,150, analysts said.
"Prices...are currently tackling stiff resistance in the
said in a commentary.
Aluminium was also on the positive side of its $1,540
resistance level, having absorbed strength from copper.
It finished at $1,545, versus Wednesday's late kerb close of
$1,537.
But producer selling would probably cap any attempts to
breach the $1,550 level, a trader noted.
Nickel continued its recovering from 26-month lows hit
earlier this week, gaining $100 to end the kerb at $6,750.
Lead prices edged up above $700 and was last at the
technical resistance level of $705, a gain of $7.
Zinc was quiet and last bid at $1,057, up $4.
Tin was up $25 at $5,845, while alloy was largely ignored
but last bid $7 stronger at $1,377.
