Traders said copper managed to absorb the third Wednesday pricing which earlier threatened to spark market volatility. In the event the pricing passed routinely, with copper remaining well entrenched in its recent ranges. "Most of the business was crossed prior to the rings, a move that helped to offset wide gyrations," one trader commented. Benchmark three months delivery copper held steady and last at $2,132, unchanged from Friday despite an easing in nearby backwardations. The cash to three months spread at one stage moved to a around $65, this compared with Friday's late levels of $100. In late November the backwardation peaked at $285. Copper is expected to hold roughly between $2,100 and $2,175 near term. Traders attention will focus now on tomorrow's LME stocks which were likely to match recent builds. On Friday they rose by a higher-than-expected 7,225 tonnes to 112,500 tonnes. "A sizeable stock build would more than likely knock the market lower," one trader said. Another trader suggested that LME stocks on Tuesday will increase by between 8,000 and 10,000 tonnes. Traders noted that UK regulator SIB was to release a report on the LME on Thursday after the Sumitomo Corp scandal rocked financial markets in June this year. Elsewhere the other base metals failed to shine amid the lack of market-related news. Aluminium after absorbing early investment fund liquidation clawed higher. It was last at $1,514, up $4. Support was likely to emerge at $1,500, while resistance was pegged at $1,540. Lead and zinc remained extremly quiet and were last at $691, down $4, and $1,052, a loss of $1. Nickel lost $5 to $6,630. Tin was indicated at $5,770/$5,780, against $5,775. Alloy was quoted at $1,357/58, versus $1,365. FRANCUSKI METALI - 16. prosinca 1996.
