LME copper wanders in quiet holiday activity
LONDON, Dec 27 (Reuter) - LME copper edged higher but held
to a tight range in very slow post-Christmas trading on Friday
morning.
The other metals followed suit, showing little enthusiasm
for making any significant moves.
Three months copper popped above $2,150 per tonne resistance
in early pre-market trade after a firm New York close on
Thursday, hitting a high of $2,165.
But prices fell back after failing to challenge resistance
pegged at $2,175, based on the highs of December 12 and 20.
They ended the morning kerb up $12 at $2,156.
Stocks data were not released on Friday due to the holidays
but traders will be eyeing them next Tuesday after inventories
rose by a net 3,950 tonnes this Tuesday.
Analysts noted that 4,100 tonnes were delivered into
Singapore, Tuesday's data showed.
"This needs careful monitoring. If stocks start to build up,
then traders' fears that recent stock drawdowns have just been a
relocation of metal may prove right," broker Rudolf Wolff said
in a commentary.
"The interpretation may be that the Chinese are not taking
as much as has been talked about," Wolff added.
Aluminium made a stab at confronting resistance at $1,570,
hitting that level and equalling the high of November 28.
But prices lost confidence after failing to surmount
resistance and ended the morning kerb at $1,556, down $1.
Support was pegged at $1,540 and $1,506/7.
Nickel revisited the 2-1/4 year low of $6,480, which was
also Tuesday's closing price, but ended Friday morning slightly
firmer at $6,510/20.
Next major support is pegged at $6,340, followed by $6,200.
Lead finished the morning $4 easier at $715 and tin was at
$5,770/75 after $5,780.
Zinc gained $3 to $1,075 and alloy was $8 weaker at $1,390.
