Recent market leader copper held a narrow range but bounced from an earlier low of $2,115 despite a another LME stocks rise. Traders said base metals generally were adopting a downside bias against the backdrop of down trending charts. "Base metals in general are weakening and stop losses on longs have already been triggered on zinc and copper," Elli Gifford of Investment Rearch of Cambridge said. Tin, under under general liquidation following recent investment fund selling, moved to a fresh 1-1/2 year low of $5,760 and looked destined to test support at $5,730 and $5,610, important lows from May 1995. Traders said the market was also dented by recent Chinese and Malaysian selling. Last business was at $5,770, down from Monday's LME kerb close of $5,840. Lead attracted Far Eastern buying interest but hovered around 13-month lows of $666, a level that was offering trendline support. It was last at $668, against $666.50. Copper managed to absorb a fourth consecutive stocks rise and held above $2,100 support. Traders said they expected prices to consolidate in later trading. "Its been very slow," one said. It was last at $2,131, down $2. Resistance was pegged at $2,150. Aluminium held support at $1,500 and was last at 1,508, versus $1,509. Aluminium was underpinned by an LME stocks fall of 2,425 and a decline in October's total IPAI stocks of 96,000 tonnes. Unwrought stocks fell by 61,000 tonnes. Nickel, following another stocks rise, fell below support at $6,800 to last trade at $6,770, down $50. Zinc was quiet and ended the morning unchanged at $1,042. Alloy was last quoted at $1,355/60, little changed. FRANCUSKI METALI - 10. prosinca 1996. BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1259 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3598 CINK EL. FFR/100 KG 625 ALUMINIJ FFR/100 KG 1010 SREB.
