The market slumped in early going, following the release Friday night of the latest round of Commitment of Traders data showing a large advance in net speculative longs. Net longs (combined non-commercial and non-reportable positions) stood at 6,264 lots as of December 3, or about twice what many traders had anticipated. Locals and commission houses drove the market down early, but the selling pressure fizzled after the first hour of trading. Light trade and speculative buying provided limited support at the lows, but most-active March hovered within a $3 per tonne range for most of the session. March futures fell $15 a tonne on the day, to $1,376, having traded from $1,373 to $1,382. May yielded $13, to $1,396. With four days to go before spot December's expiry, open interest on the contract was a meager 55 lots. Overall turnover was thin, reaching only 3,847 lots at the close. Technically, traders said $1,373-1,372 emerged as a solid support area, while nearby resistance was pegged at $1,388-1,395. Further along, a key upside hurdle was seen at $1,410, with major support at $1,350. 101052 MET dec 96
