"The locals were long and they sold it off," one trader said. "Once they started liquidating that was it for the market, there was no support." Spot March futures ended down $6 a tonne, to $1,314, after peaking at $1,334. The low was $1,311. Most-active May also fell $6, to $1,341, while the rest slipped $3 to $5. Cocoa prices spent the bulk of the session in positive territory, lifted by speculative short covering and light trade buying, as a strong showing in London buoyed sentiment, dealers said. But after failing to hold above the $1,330 level in the March contract, traders said upward momentum dried up and locals moved to liquidate their long positions. The nearby switch continued to trade actively, as operators rolled spot March into second-month May ahead of March's delivery period in two weeks. Traders await the CFTC Commitment of Traders Report due late Friday. One dealer said he expects the report to show a decrease in speculative (non-commercial and nonreportable) short positions. Technically, traders pegged March support at $1,310-$1,295, while resistance was seen at $1,325, then toward today's high of $1,334. The day's volume was fairly brisk, at an estimated 10,597 lots. 031022 MET feb 97
