Aluminium was unable to break strongly above $1,600 as brokers and speculators took profits, while nickel, despite a stocks fall, followed the pack lower. But traders said the market is now likely to consolidate at lowerlevels before resuming its recent upside gains on uptrending charts and expected consumer buying. Three months delivery copper was last at $2,248 a tonne, down on Thursday's LME kerb close of $2,270. Traders said the LME stock fall of 3,425 tonnes offered some support as did tight nearby spreads. The cash to three months backwardation widened to around $145, against $135. Borrowing of the tight Jan/Feb date was also noted. At one stage it was bid at a $92 backwardation. The tightness around this date is likely to flare next week, one LME floor trader said. Physically the European market remains tight, a condition likely to continue near-term. Above $2,270 resistance was pegged at $2,280 and $2,313, while initial support was pegged near $2,250 and $2,200. Aluminium largely ignored an LME stocks rise and a fall in IPAI November inventories. Traders said they expected the market to go higher next week. "The market is seeing profit-taking after the recent move above $1,600, overall the market maintains its upside bias," one trader said. A break above $1,610 could trigger a move to $1,650. Last business was at $1,590, a loss of $20. Nickel found support from a stocks fall of 678 tonnes. But like the other metals in the sector overhead selling was capping strong rallies. Prices drifted to settle $40 lower at $7,170. Aluminium alloy held steady levels amid a narrowing of spreads. By the close of morning business cash to three months was indicated at level to a $5 contango. It stood at a $25 contango three weeks ago. Contangos further forward were also contracting. Traders said there was a tightness in supplies and also noted further demand for the primary/alloy switch. Alloy was last unchanged at $1,515. Lead was also unmoved at $693.
