Nickel ends LME midsession higher, copper stable
LONDON, Jan 6 (Reuter) - London Metal Exchange (LME) nickel
prices featured up to the midsession recess as flurries of
short-covering and trade buying significantly lifted prices
following earlier investment fund buying.
Three months delivery nickel was last at $6,820, well up on
Friday's LME kerb close of $6,605.
It earlier peaked at a near one month high of $6,850.
Several traders and analysts said they were not surprised by
nickel's sudden move as they believed funds were running short.
A tightening in nearby spreads recently aided the upside
move, they added.
Prices are now expected to consoldiate around current levels
and may even drift back under profit-taking, traders said.
A lack of follow-through buying saw copper slip back from
its earlier probe above $2,200.
It was last at $2,192, against $2,193.
Traders said they expected copper to consolidate and
possibly head higher near term against the backdrop of consumer
demand for first quarter requirements.
However, prices need to breach $2,215 to spark a move to its
next upside barrier of $2,240.
Support for copper was pegged towards $2,170.
Aluminum was little moved amid the lack of market related
news and consumer activity.
Traders said aluminium was likely to trade between support
at $1,530 and resistance of $1,570, but might tend to the lower
end of the range following a weak chart close and an LME
inventory rise on Friday.
Last business was at $1,552, versus $1,554.
Lead was quiet at $695, downm $5, while zinc settled at
$1,062, unchanged.
Tin was last at $5,750, a loss of $10.
Alloy was quoted at $1,420/30 after Friday's close of
$1,430/33.
