Elsewhere, during a largely routine ring session the copper market remained shy of tackling resistance at $2,250, nickel fluctuated at generally lower price levels and there was little movement or interest in the rest of the complex. Traders said market sentiment favours the upside in the short term as metals such as copper, aluminium, and nickel are all poised to benefit from investment fund interest. Physicals mostly remain quiet but with fabricators, mills, refineries and other plants now resuming operations after year-end shutdowns this sector should also help the market, they added. Aluminium reached a high point of $1,602 a tonne at one stage on Thursday morning before the expected resistance and producer sales sent the market back under $1,600. Last kerb business was at $1,595 a tonne, still up $5. In the short term the market needs to consolidate, but if LME warehouse and IPAI producer inventory figures on Friday are favourable, a further run-up towards $1,650 is projected soon. Copper traded inconclusively throughout the session, initially unable to reach $2,250, and prices subsequently range-traded. By the end of the kerb three months was just $3 higher at $2,243. The cash/threes spread held stable at a $135 backwardation. Nickel whipsawed either side of $7,100 with bouts of profit-taking prompted by recent strong advances an indication of the market's need for a technical correction, traders said. Prices ended the morning at $7,120, up just $5. Lead and zinc traded quietly and hardly budged from overnight levels. Lead was down just $1 at $685, while zinc shed $1.50 to settle at $1,063.50. Tin also held close to previous levels and was quoted at $5,825/30 at the close of the kerb. Alloy moved higher, partly with primary but also reflecting developing tightness. Business at $1,490 was $25 up from Wednesday. FRANCUSKI METALI - 08. siječnja 1997. BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1326 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3642 CINK EL. FFR/100 KG 625 ALUMINIJ FFR/100 KG 995 SREB.
