"The market was a tad oversold," one trader said. "It was looking for a bottom." Dealers said trade buying and speculative short covering erased morning losses and buoyed values $10 a tonne across-the-board. Commission house selling knocked the December contract to a session low of $1,352, just short of $1,350 support. December cocoa settled at $1,371, up $10, after reaching a high of $1,376. Spot September rose $10, to $1,331. Traders await the release of U.K. crop analyst PCR Limited's updated Ivorian forecast due later this week. Talk that a private forecaster late last week raised its 1996/97 Ivorian crop estimate as high as 930,000 tonnes had weighed on the market. Preliminary assessments came in around 800,000 to 850,000 tonnes. But after escaping damage from heavy rains in July, crop analysts said Ivorian prospects have improved slightly. Technically, traders continued to peg December support at $1,350, with the subsequent level seen at $1,341, a low reached late last month. Resistance eas seen at $1,390, a doucle top on the charts.
