With the September contract going into the notice period on Monday and open interest down to 6,234 lots as of August 14, dealers said they expected the spot contract's expiry to be relatively uneventful. Spot September ended $13 a tonne lower, at $1,376, while the most-active December contract fell $8, to $1,424, after ranging between $1,443 to $1,422. The remaining months lost $8. The market traded higher early in the session on speculative buying, dealers said, but trade and local selling pushed prices below unchanged, where they remained the rest of the afternoon. In the absence of fresh fundamentals, traders continued to look toward the charts. They pegged December support at $1,410-1,405, while resistance was near $1,450. One dealer said the market may trade in a narrow range until the September contract goes into delivery. With second-month December's open interest relatively low at 28,273 lots on August 14, he said there was "plenty of room" for speculators to buy. Fundamentally, any updated forecasts for the 1996/97 Ivorian harvest, expected to come in well below last season's record yield, could also spark speculative interest, he said.
