Benchmark December cocoa settled down $25 a tonne, at $1,410, after ranging between $1,430 and $1,408. Spot September fell $20, to $1,366, while the back months closed $20 to $26 lower. Technically, the December contract managed to hold above support at $1,407, a double bottom on the charts. The next downside target was pegged at $1,400. Traders said the December contract's failure on Wednesday to pierce resistance at $1,444-$1,445 discouraged speculators holding long positions. "With no supportive news to make people buy this market, the weak longs are getting out," one analyst said. Despite today's steep losses, the analyst said the market appeared to be pausing near current levels until revised West African crop forecasts emerged in late August. In preliminary assessments, pod counters estimated the 1996/97 Ivorian harvest would come in between 800,000 and 900,000 tonnes, compared to last season's record yield of more than one million tonnes. Volume reached an estimated 7,344 lots.
