The market took a downturn at the open, pressured by trade selling, dealers said. But after the key December position survived a test of nearby chart support at $1,405 a tonne, dealers said manufacturer-related buying emerged. "It seems after every set back, there is interest from manufacturers," one trader said. After managing to fill a gap between $1,432 and $1,435, December peaked at $1,439. Dealers said steady trade selling trimmed gains and December finished up $14 a tonne, at $1,432, its highest settlement since July 9. Its session low was $1,407. Spot September ended $11 higher, at $1,389, while the remaining months gained $13. Volume reached an estimated 10,779 lots. Fundamentally, the market was little changed, with traders still looking toward revised West African crop forecasts for direction. 161019 MET aug 96
