The market advanced some $20 a tonne across-the-board, but traders said scale-up manufacturer selling kept the most-active December position from completely filling a gap between $1,426 and $1,435. December reached a session high of $1,432, and finished just below that level at $1,431, up $25 on the day. After another attempt to close the gap at $1,435, traders said December's next upside objective would be around $1,445-$1,450. Spot September rose $23, to end at $1,386, while the remaining months gained $20 to $22. Turnover on the day reached an estimated 8,060 lots. Traders said strength on the Knight-Ridder Commodity Research Bureau (KR-CRB) index, buoyed by gains on grains, cotton, and energy futures, also lent some psychological support to the cocoa market. On the physical front, preliminary Ivorian 1996/97 crop surveys forecasting a smaller and later harvest compared with this year's record tally continued to provide underlying support. "I think the market is still encouraged by the expectation that the upcoming crop is going to be down from a year ago," said Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson. 131138 MET aug 96
