A weaker trend on the British pound versus the U.S. dollar spurred some selling in favor of the London market, dealers said, cutting off an early rally that carried prices up by some $10 per tonne. Trade selling was cited as well, confining the market to negative territory for most of the session. The switches were also active today, as dealers geared up for Monday's first notice day on the spot September contract. With stock levels thought to be adequate, traders said they expected September's expiry would be relatively uneventful. December cocoa fell $9 on the day, to $1,415, ranging from $1,411 to $1,432. September eased $7, to $1,369, while the outer months slid $6 to $15. While today's losses were fairly modest, some market watchers said cocoa appeared to have ended the week on technically shaky ground. "The rally in cocoa is over," said Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier. "I think we're putting in a nice head-and-shoulders top, and we're going to break $1,360 (basis December) next week." Having breached a near-term trendline at $1,415, December looked poised to take out its 40-day moving average of $1,409 on Monday, he said. The day's volume was estimated at 10,397 lots. 191207 MET aug 96
