"There was a lot of weak longs getting out of the market," one trader said. December cocoa settled down $21 a tonne, at $1,361, its lowest level since March 29, after ranging between $1,390 and $1,360. Spot September fell $8, to $1,321, while the back months closed $15 to $21 lower. Fund liquidation has battered the market the last four consecutive sessions, with December sliding $74 a tonne since last Wednesday's close, or about five percent. Fueling the market's downturn has been unconfirmed reports that a private forecaster raised its 1996/97 Ivorian crop estimate as high as 900,000 tonnes. Earlier assessments came in around 800,000 to 850,000 tonnes. "There are a lot of rumors, but nothing conclusive," one trader said. He said while the market's short-term outlook would depend on the updated Ivory Coast crop reports, in the long-term market fundamentals, such as strong grind figures, remained constructive.
