The benchmark December cocoa settled down $19 a tonne, at $1,391, its lowest level in more than two weeks, and just above the session low of $1,390. Spot September fell $16, to $1,350, while the back months closed $18 to $27 lower. Technically, traders pegged support $1,375 in the December contract, while resistance was seen at $1,405- $1,407. Although no fresh Ivorian crop assessments emerged, traders said there was talk revised pod counts for the 1996/97 havest would come in at around 900,000 tonne, a bit higher than earlier estimates. "Earlier this week there was news that heavy rains may not have damaged (Ivory Coast) crops," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. Indeed, Ivorian crop analysts this week said the crop probably escaped damage from heavy rains in early July, and put current estimates between 850,000 and 900,000 tonnes, compared to some preliminary assessments ranging from 800,000 to 850,000 tonnes.
