Benchmark December cocoa fell $6 on the day, to $1,409, ranging from $1,424 to $1,407. September, which went into notice period today, closed down $9, to $1,360, while the remaining months settled $10 lower to $3 higher. Light speculative buying limited losses, and kept the benchmark December contract above key chart support at $1,403 a tonne, traders said. But the session was thinly traded, with little in the way of news to inspire a breakout in either direction. "It was absolutely dead," one trader said, noting today's volume totaled a slim 3,450 lots. The switches accounted for much of the day's turnover, as dealers continued to unload their September positions ahead of the spot contract's September 13 expiry. Dealers said that with September's open interest at only 1,673 lots as of last Friday, and a total of 826 tenders issued today, September's expiry was of little consequence to the outright market. Chartists looked toward $1,403 basis December to provide near-term support. A subsequent upside target was seen at $1,398, while resistance was noted at today's high of $1,424, followed by $1,432. The CFTC Commitment of Traders data released late Friday offered little impetus to the market, dealers said. They cited the small non-commercial position of 15,149 lots (as of August 13) as a reflection of tepid interest in a market devoid of fundamental news. "The specs are out of the market," another trader said. "They are just waiting for a reason to buy." 201029 MET aug 96
