March cocoa ended at $1,602 a tonne, up $24 from Thursday's close, trading between $1,576 and $1,608 a tonne. Spot December ended at $1,581 a tonne, up $33. Brazil's northern state of Bahia is expected to produce 2.19 million 60-kg bags of cocoa from its 1997/98 (May/April) crop, down from 3.09 million the previous year, the Bahian Commercial Association said Friday. The mid-crop, which runs from May to September, at 1.34 million bags against 1.69 million bags the previous year. Although a weaker crop was expected out of Brazilian state of Bahia, traders said such numbers were expected and played little role in Friday's rally. "We've been in a bear market now for several weeks," said Arthur Stevenson, analyst with Prudential Securities. "We saw some bottom fishing and a technical bounce, which brought a halt to some of the speculative liquidation we've seen." Prices have fallen $211, or 12 percent, from October 8 through December 1, before rebounding this week. Bahia arrivals totaled 2.00 million bags on the week ended November 30, compared with 2.25 million bags. "There's no real surprise there," Stevenson said. "Most people were expecting a weaker crop from Brazil this year. It was already in the market." "The Ivory Coast crop is more closely watched," said one commission house broker. "Brazil didn't have much of an effect on the market." On the daily March chart, the rally petered out at trendline resistance at $1,608, a trend that began with the October 8 high of $1,770. The $1,608 mark also represents a 38.1 percent retracement of the move beginning with the November 11 high of $1,677 a tonne. The 50-percent mark is $1,618 a tonne. 081105 MET dec 97
