A wave of specuative selling drove prices down sharply in the morning, but scale-down trade buying staved off a test of chart support at $1,645 basis the March contract. From then on, prices drifted in a relatively narrow range, as speculators sought to roll nearby positions forward. December futures, which enter delivery period Thursday, fell $7 per tonne on the day to $1,614. Most-active March eased $6 to $1,660, after trading from $1,647 to $1,661. Some traders said they expected as many as 2,000 to 3,000 notices to be issued against December at the start of the delivery period. "There is a potential for a lot of tenders," said one. "But it's very likely that you'll see people square up their positions and that December will go out with a whimper rather than a bang." Open interest on December tumbled nearly 7,000 lots during Tuesday's session, to 7,864 lots, and traders said they expected another downturn to be posted after today's trading. The day's volume reached an estimated 15,199 lots. Elsewhere, the latest cocoa arrivals at Ivorian ports totaled 160,000 tonnes by November 9, compared with 120,000 tonnes by November 3 of last year, exporters in ABidjan said Wednesday. 131042 MET nov 97
