A round of trade buying in the December contract ahead of the close also buoyed values, they said. Benchmark September rose $18 tonne on the day, to $1,595, after ranging from $1,597 to $1,568. December ended $15 higher, at $1,643, while the remaining months finished up $11 to $32. Dealers noted a tightening of the switches, with September/December ending at $48 versus $51 at the close on Monday. Cocoa prices headed lower at the outset, with September drifting down $9, on local selling. But dealers said light trade interest toward the lows stemmed losses and prompted locals to turn around and cover short positions. Upward momentum picked up after the September contract got through Monday's close of $1,577, triggering light buy-stops in the mid-$1,580s. Although the market ended on a positive note, some dealers said prices were likely to come under pressure as speculators, who are believed to be net long some 25,000 lots, liquidate positions. Technically, traders said September will probably face some resistance at $1,600, with the next level seen at $1,610. On the downside, September support was put near $1,575-$1,570. The day's volume reached an estimated 6,110 lots. 161029 MET jul 97
