European veg oil prices static during afternoon
LONDON, Aug 12 (Reuter) - European vegetable oil prices were
almost unchanged from midday at the close on Tuesday.
European traders were unimpressed by the performance of the
Chicago market following the release of the USDA crop report.
"We are somewhat bewildered by Chicago. How can they justify
higher prices when faced with a record soybean crop?" said one
trader.
"This seems to be getting to be the normal reaction in
Chicago, when the USDA put out bearish figures for soybeans the
price goes up, but at the end of the day it's the harvest that
matters, not what speculators think," said another trader.
In its report the USDA forecast the 1997/98 (Sept/Aug)
soybean crop at 2.744 billion bushels. That figure is 15 percent
higher than last year's output and above trade expectations for
2.607 billion to 2.731 billion.
The recent upward trend in palm oil was checked earlier when
profit-taking and a rebound by the Malaysian ringgit against the
dollar reduced prices.
At the close of business Dutch soy oil one to 0.50 guilders
up after May/Jul traded at 107.50 guilders a 100 kilos.
Dutch/EU rape oil finished with sellers 0.50 guilders higher
after Nov/Jan traded at 106, 105.75 and 106.25 guilders a 100
kilos fob ex-mill all prior to the Chicago opening.
Crude palm oil closed $5 to $7.50 down while products were
$2.50 a tonne lower.
Coconut oil failed to attract any interest and closed $5 to
$7.50 down while palmkernel oil was $15 lower after Sep/Oct
traded at $555 and $552.50, Oct/Nov at $562.50 and $560 and
Nov/Jan at $560 and $562.50 a tonne cif.
Traders said most of the business was switches.
