"We should be used to this by now, it happens every year when Chicago over-reacts to changes in the weather, but it still takes people by surprise at first," said one trader. Soft oils attracted some fairly active trading prior to the Chicago opening, but this soon dried up. Palm oil production, stocks and export data released by the Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (PORLA) were seen as neutral. PORLA put June output at 787,807 tonnes against 792,540 tonnes at end-May, down 0.60 percent. Stocks at end-June were 786,123 tonnes against 712,289, a rise of 10.37 percent, while exports were running at 612,124 tonnes against 633,507 in May. Higher palm oil prices at the close in Malaysia following export figures from Malaysian cargo surveyor SGS had no impact on prices in Europe. SGS put exports between July 1-15 at 307,536 tonnes against 290,935 tonnes during the same period in May. Coconut oil broke through $600 a tonne during the afternoon in active dealer selling, but traders said the fall was mainly due to weak Far East currencies against the dollar. At the close Dutch soy oil was 1.50 to one guilders down after Jul traded at 106.50 and 107 guilders per 100 kg. Dutch/EU rape oil sellers were unchanged to 0.50 guilders lower, with trading reported in Aug at 104.25, Sep/Oct at 104 and Nov/Jan at 103.50 and 104 guilders per 100 kg fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil finished $5 to $2.50 down while products were $2.50 up to $5 lower with no further business reported. Coconut oil sellers were $5 to $7.50 lower at the close after Jul/Aug, Sep/Oct and Oct/Nov all traded at $600.00 and $597.50, while Aug/Sep and Nov/Dec fetched $597.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil was quoted $10 to $7.50 down. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 161027 MET jul 97
