Euro veg oils little changed, hampered by currency
LONDON, July 18 (Reuter) - European vegetable oil prices
closed little changed on Friday, with business hampered by the
firm dollar.
Higher Chicago futures at the opening, on forecasts of dry
weather over the weekend in the U.S. Midwest, had no impact on
prices.
"Chicago has become a sideshow, everybody is watching
currency," said another trader.
No significant price changes were reported in the palm oil
sector despite the higher Malaysian market, boosted by
short-covering and the weak ringgit.
The holiday in Malaysia on Thursday, coupled with the
currency situation, kept the market very quiet, traders said.
A weaker ringgit should make palm oil more attractive on the
export market, giving the flagging market a much-needed boost.
At the close of business Dutch soy oil was unchanged to 0.50
guilders up after Nov/Jan traded at 103.75 guilders per 100
kilos.
Rape oil finished 0.50 guilders up to unchanged in a
tradeless market.
Crude palm oil ended the day mixed at $2.50 up to $2.50 down
in a tradeless market, while products were $2.50 lower with no
further business reported.
In thin trading coconut oil gained $12.50 to $10 on the day
with two trades reported, but not confirmed.
Aug/Sep coconut was reported traded at $592.50 with the same
price paid for Oct/Nov.
"It could have been a switch at even money, but we can't
confirm that," said one trader.
Palmkernel oil closed $10 higher, with no business reported.
