"There's plentiful supply, disappointed longs liquidating and no bullish news," said Refco analyst Ann Prendergast. "The path of least resistance is lower." Benchmark July futures ended $14 a tonne lower, at $1,400, after ranging from $1,410 to $1,392. Spot May also fell $14, to $1,394, while the back months closed $12 lower to $6 higher. After plummeting some $40 on Tuesday, traders said continued speculative liquidation pushed the market into negative territory at the outset. News that broker GNI cut its 1996/97 world cocoa deficit estimate to 33,000 tonnes from its earlier forecast of 180,000 tonnes set a bearish tone, traders said. GNI said its reduced deficit projection was due to an increased production estimate for top-grower Ivory Coast. They put total 1996/97 Ivorian output at 1.15 million tonnes, including a 160,000-tonne mid-crop. 020807 MET may 97
