May delivery slipped $12 on the day, to close at $1,492, after ranging from $1,510 to $1,488. Second-month July fell $13, to $1,524, while the outer months ended $13 lower. Traders said forecasts for lackluster European first quarter grinds -- a key barometer of consumption -- may have dampened the market's recent bullish tone. The region's main processors -- the Netherlands, Germany and Britain -- posted strong grindings in the first quarter of last year, which will be difficult to top in 1997, they said. However, analysts have stressed the grindings may not accurately reflect consumption, which they said was steady to higher. "The numbers are going to look disappointing, but they are actually concealing steady to good consumption in Europe," said Refco Inc. analyst Ann Prendergast. "The grinds may be misleading because many producers have started to process their cocoa, plus last year's first quarter grinds were extremely high." The Dutch grind figure is expected to be released on Friday while the German and British figures are likely to be announced next week. Some traders said the grinds would probably have little impact on the market, and despite today's set back the market retained its recent bullish tone. After the market's recent run-up to its highest level since July 1994, they said a technical correction was to be expected. "The market still looks constructive technically and I still think it will break the $1,543 level (basis May)," one trader said. "But it may consolidate in this range until we get all this grind data out of the way." Volume on the exchange was moderate at an estimated 8,020 lots, down from Wednesday's official tally of 12,636 lots.
