May cocoa fell $4 a tonne on the day, to $1,414, toward the floor of its $1,413-1,427 range. Most-active July eased $6, to $1,455. Once again, dealings centered on the nearby switch, as speculators adjusted positions before May goes into notice period on April 17. May's discount to second-month July traded out to $44 today before pulling back to $41 at the close, down from $43 on Monday. Traders said they expected the narrowing of the switch to continue over the next few days, as dealers roll shorts forward. Concern over the quality of the mid-crop in the Ivory Coast, and talk of a squeeze in the London cocoa market, could also underpin the nearby month, , they said. "I think May-July will continue to come in," said one dealer, noting recent gains athe market's steep contango. With few concrete fundamentals to go on, however, the market may have trouble breaking out of its $1,400-$1,500 band basis July, dealers said. Good support was seen for July at Friday's low of $1,433. To the upside, a large chart gap awaited at $1,480-1,504. Volume on the day was estimated at 10,784 lots. 161037 MET apr 97
