But local short-covering and light manufacturer-linked buying trimmed gains, they said, and prevented the spot May contract from slipping through chart support at $1,370 a tonne. May delivery slumped $20 on the day, to close at $1,380, after ranging from $1,408 to $1,370. Second-month July also fell $20, to $1,420, while the outer months ended $14 to $19 lower. Cocoa prices headed lower at the outset, gapping down some $5, but managed to push back above unchanged a couple of times before speculators started to sell again, traders said. Downward momentum accelerated after light sell-stops were triggered below $1,375 basis May. Strength in the U.S. dollar against the British pound also weighed on the market, they said. The U.S. currency drew strength from expectations of another rise in U.S. interest rates on Wednesday. May open interest continued to decline, falling 4,173 lots on Tuesday to 17,175 lots. But with first notice day about a week away, traders still expected nearby cocoa to continue to come under pressure as speculators liquidate or roll spot positions forward. Technically, traders said, there still appeared to be some support basis May at $1,370-$1,368, but said a breach of that level could lead to a test of $1,350. Resistance was seen at $1,400. The market's fundamentals are likely to continue to weigh on sentiment, some traders said, with disappointing first-quarter European grinds and recent rains that improved prospects for the Ivorian mid-crop limiting any upside move. But other traders said solid demand and a golbal cocoa deficit in 1996/97 should provide underlying support. Volume on the exchange reached an estimated 12,394 lots, with trades of May/July switches accounted for a good portion of the day's turnover. 101002 MET apr 97
