Producer-linked selling drove the market to the day's lows early on, but scattered buying interest returned by midday. The nearby months also benefitted from light London-New York arbitrage buying, traders said. "There was selling early in the morning from the Ivory Coast in the forward positions, but aside from that there was not much going on," one broker said. Benchmark July rose $9 a tonne, to close at $1,449, having traded from $1,432 to $1,456. Spot May, which has only 733 lots of open interest remaining, climbed $13, to $1,425, while the outer months gained $6 to $9. Turnover remained exceedingly thin, and traders said market sentiment would likely remain subdued unless the July contract managed to break out of the $1,410-1,480 band it has clung to for the past several weeks.
