May delivery ended $2 firmer at $1,400 a tonne after ranging from $1,403 to $1,377. Second-month July rose $4 to $1,440, while the outer months ended $3 to $12 higher. Speculative long liquidation drove prices lower at the outset, with the nearby contracts gapping some $13 a tonne down at the opening bell, after losses in London overnight. But after spending the bulk of the day in negative territory, prices managed to climb above unchanged in the last hour of trading. Dealers said said a hefty 9,037-lot drop in May open interest on Monday, to 21,348 lots, helped relieve some of the pressure. "I think some people said: wow, all these specs are out," one trader said. "And the market steadied." While May's open interest was cut by nearly a third on Monday, some traders said nearby cocoa was likely to continue to come under pressure as speculators liquidate or roll spot positions into July before May's first notice day on April 17. "There's still more than 20,000 open interest and there are still a lot of longs in this market," a trader said. "Plus there's no reason for it to go back to $1,500." The market's fundamentals are likely to continue to weigh on sentiment, traders said, with disappointing first-quarter European grinds and recent rains that improved prospects for the Ivorian mid-crop limiting any upside move. But some traders were encouraged by the market's recovery off lows today and said the market may continue to correct higher after dropping $112 a tonne -- or more than seven percent -- since the first of April. On the charts, traders said May would need to hold above $1,395 to shore up its stance. Resistance was seen at around $1,420. Near-term support was pegged at $1,380, followed by $1,370, with the strong downside hurdle at $1,350. Volume on the exchange reached an estimated 15,770 lots, just over half Monday's official record turnover of 30,678 lots. 091113 MET apr 97
