Output at the world's biggest producer is shaping up for a 1996/97 cocoa midcrop of at least 150,000 tonnes, but young pod survival into mid May will determine final estimates, crop analysts and exporters said. "A midcrop of 150,000 tonnes will certainly support a break lower back through $1,400 per tonne in the July contract, and today may be the beginning of that move," Corey Bell of Dean Witter said. "It's hard to support the market when it appears that supplies will be ample from the primary producer," Bell said. After an initial dip early in the session to a low of $1,427 per tonne in most-active July, the market bounced before languishing for the rest of the session. July settled $23 weaker at $1,440 a tonne, traded $1,446 to $1,427. Volume was light at an estimated 4,610 lots. Elsewhere the African twin island state of Sao Tome and Principe has appealed for financial and technical aid from abroad to tackle a disease which is threatening its entire, albeit tiny cocoa crop of about 7,000 tonnes a year. LIFFE cocoa futures ended lower after fund selling which later dragged down New York, traders said. 221215 MET apr 97
